One of the biggest steps forward for anyone wanting to get fitter and lose some weight at Slimming World is to find their weight-loss buddy.
Whether that is an old friend or a new one, the two of you can work together, share some goals and celebrate as those pounds come off. So how much better would it be if that weight-loss buddy was your own dad?
For Bethany Young, pairing up with her dad at their local Slimming World classes was the best thing she has ever done – and dad Pete couldn’t be happier with their new look!
For his daughter the path to Slimming World was a familiar one – trying lots of ways to get fitter, none of which clicked and all of which just added to her feeling that she was stuck with those extra pounds.
“I was completely miserable,” says Bethany.
“I had tried numerous fad diets and had no luck. I was in pain with my knees and uncomfortable. But when I met someone who lost seven stone with Slimming World, I thought ‘that’s amazing!’
“I always started my other diets with someone, but when they stopped, I did too. So this time I thought I’m going to do this on my own.
“It took me all my energy to walk in as I was so nervous. I thought ‘I’m the biggest person here!’
“I was welcomed in with open arms at the Slimming World group in Anlaby and everyone was so lovely. There was a lady at my group that had lost 12 stone and I was completely in awe of her achievement. My goal was to lose 10 stone. I thought, if that lady can lose 12, I can lose 10!”
“I went home that day buzzing with excitement, thinking I can do this! I spent weeks with my head in the Slimming World books learning how wrong I had been thinking certain foods were good for me.”
Bethany decided to encourage dad Pete to join his local Slimming World group too.
She said: “My dad has tried all the fad diets, but I wanted him to know this one is for real. In January he finally gave in and – oh my goodness- the weight couldn’t come off him quick enough!
“I am so proud of my dad’s achievements. Doing Slimming World together has brought us closer than ever before. We now video call for an hour, whilst my dad batch cooks all the new recipes he makes.
“We are both much healthier and happier. Having my dad being as passionate as me about Slimming World is amazing.”
Dad Pete was stuck in a rut many people will understand, but ‘a bit of nagging’ from Bethany and he was hooked.
Pete told us: “I have been overweight all of my life – Who ate all the pies? I did!
“I had to pull the bath plug out with my toe, I had to sit down to tie my shoelace and then rock on the chair to get back up again. Everywhere I sat was uncomfortable, I hated having my photo taken and was generally ashamed of my body. I have always been a very happy man and generally confident except when in front of a lens or a mirror.
“I have tried many diets before and have lost a bit of weight before, but the diets are not sustainable and old habits and boredom of the particular diet I was on, soon added to my body inches.
“Bethany had joined Slimming World a few months before Christmas 2019 and had been doing amazingly well. Much nagging at me ensued, and having seen my weight after New Year, my resolution was easy – do something about my weight once and for all. So I looked online and contacted my local group in Beverley.
“It has helped me enormously having Bethany doing the Slimming World plan as well. We are always helping and advising each other on a daily basis, swapping recipes, plus eating and drinking advice. Finding new foods with little or no syn value and then telling each other about them. I wish I had the vocabulary to express the pride I feel when I see Bethany and what she has achieved -she has been my inspiration.
“I have not just lost weight I have lost every X in front of the L in my clothes!”
How Food Optimising works
As well as family teamwork, for both Bethany and Pete it was Slimming World’s food optimising that was the key to their amazing weight loss. There are three steps in Food Optimising that can change your life:
Free Foods promotes consumption of plenty of low energy, dense and highly satiating foods like poultry, fish, lean meat, pasta, grains, vegetables and fruit, which can be eaten without restriction. Members are encouraged to use these foods to satisfy their appetite while reducing overall energy intake.
Healthy Extras help provide a good overall balance of nutrients in addition to those obtained from Free Foods, with particular emphasis on calcium and fibre-rich foods, eg milk, cheese, cereals and wholemeal bread.
Syns are the way members can enjoy the foods that many diets ban – without a shred of guilt! Counting Syns helps members naturally limit consumption of saturated fats, alcohol and sugar, ie those foods with a high energy density and poor ability to satisfy hunger. It is the synergy between Free Foods, Healthy Extras and Syns that makes Food Optimising effective and easy to live with long term.
Food Optimising was what really excited Bethany.
She said: “Wow all this free food! I can eat the things I like – I really love Slimming World chips and pasta.
“I could still eat lots and the weight was falling off me. I never go hungry and I can experiment with so many different types of food. It’s all delicious and totally good for me. Each week that passed I felt better and had lots more energy. I was eating everything everyone else was, just cooking it in a healthier way.
Pete agrees: “The main problem for me was eating at the wrong times-never having breakfast or dinner and just having a massive tea. Snacking was a big issue too. I have had no magic pill or special treatment, I have literally just followed the plan for six or seven months. “
For daughter and dad, the health improvements have transformed their lives, and it is quite an impressive list of changes for Bethany.
“My knees no longer hurt, I no longer ache and I don’t feel as tired. My back doesn’t hurt. My skin has cleared up from spots. I don’t get loads of colds and flu. I have a spring in my step. I can run after my son and play with him without getting tired. I was getting lazy before because it hurt me to move. Now I’m up and down all the time with ease.”
Pete is now a lover of walking and cycling.
He said: “I am full of energy. I breathe easier and I am considerably fitter. My old adage was ‘if God had meant me to walk or cycle he would not have let me have a driving licence!’ Now I now love to walk and cycle and like to make sure I get at least 6000 steps a day. I have my body magic awards and simple casual exercise is now a way of life.”
Any final advice for anyone hoping to lose those unwanted pounds and stones?
Bethany says: “Do it on your own! Do it with family! Either way the results are fantastic. And the support is endless.”
Pete added: “Within my working life I am always looking at continuous improvement and I use the system of Plan, Do, Check, Act. It is continuous and never-ending and I have utilised this in my Slimming World journey.”
