VERNON TOWNSHIP — A new online pet food company has leased 28,000 square feet of space at the Crawford Business Park as its order fulfillment and pet food blending center.
Tailored Pet Nutrition Inc. already has set up its order fulfillment center with six employees at the industrial park just outside of Meadville, according to Steve Joyce, co-founder and chief executive officer.
Tailored sells online only, direct to the consumer, with customized dog food blends that are based on health-first, personalized recipes based on each dog’s unique nutritional needs, according to Joyce.
Headquartered in Sewickley, Tailored formally launched in mid-May and already has 17 employees including the six in Meadville, Joyce said.
Additional employment is planned in the Meadville area.
“It’s tough to say numbers at this point, but we’ll staff up as volume picks up,” Joyce said Monday.
The company was founded by a group of pet nutrition experts who spent decades studying pet health and nutrition. Joyce is the former vice president of marketing for Ainsworth Pet Nutrition Inc.
The Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County, which owns the Crawford Business Park, is happy to have Tailored onboard with a multi-year lease.
“The alliance has been working with this company for the past six months and we have been very impressed with them,” said Jim Becker, executive director of EPACC. “We are excited to welcome Tailored to Crawford County to join our business and manufacturing community. This is really good news.”
Tailored has leased 28,000 square feet of space that had been storage space used by multiple other tenants, Becker said. The storage space was on a month-to-month basis for the other tenants.
Tailored will be able to grow within the 28,000 square feet as its business increases, according to Becker.
Ryan Hunter, Tailored’s chief supply chain officer, said the company appreciated the work of EPACC in getting the firm operational.
“Without their support, we would not have been able to stand-up our fulfillment operations as quickly and efficiently as we did,” he said.
Tailored chose the Crawford Business Park for its fulfillment center for logistical purposes, as well as the availability of a skilled workforce, according to Joyce.
“We knew there were a lot of talented people in the Meadville area,” he said.
Tailored sells exclusively online to the 48 states of the continental U.S.
To customize each pet food product, Tailored has pet owners take a short quiz.
The quiz asks detailed questions about an owner’s dog, ranging from gender and breed size, to specific food sensitivities and health concerns, Joyce said. Based on the information, Tailored then offers a personalized recipe for each pet’s specific needs, complete with customized feeding instructions.
