The “Springs Family Y” (YMCA) provides many alternatives for fitness and sports activities for families  in the community.

“The YMCA is already a strong resource for fitness in the Dripping Springs Community- with our 2 swimming pools and gym equipment, “YMCA Health and Wellness Director Bernadette Johnson said. “But we would also like area residents to know about our many alternatives which include our new functional fitness area for adults and our Youth Sport League for children.”

The new functional fitness area includes a newly installed “Ninja Warrior Rig,” and a matted area where kettle ball weights, battle ropes, and more traditional weights can be found. “The Ninja Warrior Rig is a great place to train for ‘adventure races’ which are quite popular now,” Johnson said.

The new functional fitness area also hosts TRX and martial arts classes. TRX is a physical training method developed by Navy SEAL Randy Hetrick using suspension devices like parachute cording in lieu of physical weights for resistance.. The martial arts classes offered range from kick boxing, to martial arts, “Warrior Class.”

“We offer many alternatives for members to train,” Johnson said. “We understand that ‘one size doesn’t fit all,’ and  we also understand we have to offer different class times.”

For children, the Springs YMCA offers “Youth Sport League,” under the management of program coordinator Edward Jones.

“Youth Sport League is more about exposing young children to different sports and the basic skills needed to play those sports,” Jones said. “It’s not about competition, but more about having fun and seeing if a child enjoys a particular sport.”

To emphasize his point, Jones points to the “Youth Sports Pledge,” YSL participants abide by. It states, “I pledge to play the game; the best that I can; to be a team player; to respect my opponents; the rules and officials; and improve myself in mind, body and spirit.

Currently YSL is running it’s Youth Basketball League on Saturdays, with soccer being next on the list. The full list for YMCA youth sports is archery, baseball/T-ball, basketball, flag football, futsal, soccer, tennis, track, and volleyball.

The Springs Family Y is located at 27216 Ranch Road 12. For more information call (512) 894-3309, or visit https://www.austinymca.org/branches/springs-family-y .
