The Trump administration has used the economic anxiety that far too many Americans face to vilify recipients of SNAP and other benefits as freeloaders who are content with handouts from hardworking taxpayers. This serves to mask the country’s increasing economic inequality, which is caused by a failure to raise the federal minimum wage, tax policies that benefit the wealthy, outsourcing of living-wage jobs, attacks on unions, and cuts to child care, housing, health-care programs and more.
