Being overweight or obese can put people at risk of health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease. To others, having a wider waistline may lower their self-esteem.
Health experts recommend that people make healthy changes in their daily routine to manage their weight. These changes include eating more healthy, natural foods, reducing processed products and being physically active.
However, weight loss requires willpower to see progress. Some people may find it difficult to overhaul their entire eating routine or give extra time to visit the gym.
That leads them to adding weight loss supplements to their regimen. Many of such products promise to help speed up the process to losing fat with less effort, energy and time needed.
However, there are overwhelming options people can find online, making it hard to determine which has been tested and proven effective for weight loss. Below are some of the common supplements that science says have little to no effects.
People claimed that increasing alkaline pH in the body could help improve digestion and accelerate weight loss. But there is no scientific evidence of the positive effects of alkaline water on weight loss, according to researchers at the University of Newcastle in Australia.
“Your stomach is highly acidic at a pH less than 3.5, with this acid helping breakdown food. It then moves into the small bowel for digestion and absorption where the pH increases to 4.5 – 5.0, which is still acidic,” the researchers said in an article posted on The Conversation. “Your body has finely controlled pH balancing mechanisms to make sure your blood pH stays between 7.35 – 7.45.”
Raspberry Ketone Supplements
These chemicals come from red raspberries and are sold in tablets. However, raspberry ketone supplements have been found not effective in promoting weight loss, especially when people retain unhealthy diets and less active lifestyle.
In one study, adults who maintained their regular eating and exercise patterns did not experience any changes in their weight after regularly taking raspberry ketone supplements.
Another research with 70 obese adults found that people needed to combine the supplements with weight loss diet and exercise program to see results.
Garcinia Cambogia Supplements
This weight loss supplement is made from a tropical fruit that contains Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA). People claimed intake of HCA supports weight loss since it blocks production of fatty acids.
However, a study with 135 men and women showed there is no difference in the lost weight between people who took the supplement and those who received placebo. Another trial with overweight participants also found Garcinia cambogia extract cut weight as small as placebo.
Matcha Green Tea Powder
To date, no studies are available to support the claim that matcha green tea powder could help speed up weight loss. In addition, even experiments that explored the direct effects of green tea preparations showed the product has no effect on weight.
In Japan, people appeared losing weight when adding green tea preparations to their daily routine. But the researchers that tested the beverage in other countries did not find the same effect.
